Editing can be a delicate matter. It’s a hard thing to take something you’ve written and hand it off to someone else, hoping that they appreciate all the work you put into it…but also hoping that they will help you make it better. 

So personality and temperament are part of being an editor, just as much as skills and experience in composition and flow and syntax and grammar. I have been editing professionally for 25+ years…and I’m patient, easy to get along with, and encouraging. Even if what we’re working on needs a lot of work, we will build on the good and work together to fix the not-so-good.

And if that’s too much relationship for you, if you just need another set of eyes to give it a final look-over before you send it off…then hey, we can do that, too.

Types of & Rates for Editing

Proofreading is about getting rid of the simple errors; spelling, capitalization. This is usually the last thing done before a work is considered complete. Proofreading is done as a last step to catch surface problems with the content. 

My proofreading rate is $3 per page.

Copy editing is about improving style, formatting, and accuracy, fixing inconsistencies, and making sure the style flows well. This service also includes:

  • Double-checking accuracy and taking care of most grammatical issues, 

  • Minor corrections of flow and minor re-structuring of some paragraphs,

  • Implementing a style sheet or formatting, 

  • Fact-checking, 

  • Cross-checking in-text references with bibliography.

  • Proofreading services (listed above) are considered part of this service and are included at this rate.

My rate for copy editing is $5-7 per page. The range has to do with the number of grammatical issues involved and can be determined before we begin.

In content editing, the work is much more intensive, and often involves a fair amount of writing or re-writing sections of content. This is a different level of editing, and can include a fair amount of content creation along with making corrections. This is where I’d say, “this section just isn’t saying what you want it to say,” and you say, “Can you fix it for me?” and then I take your content and rewrite it.

My rate for content editing is $7.50 per page.
